The role of citizens in our Democracy does not end with your vote. America's never been about what can be done for us. It's about what can be done by us together through the hard and frustrating, but necessary work of self-government. That's the principle we were founded on.

Clean Virginia Waterways is holding cleanups on Nov. 10 at Four Mile Run Park in Arlandria and Monticello Park in North Ridge.
The clean-ups will run from 9am. to 2pm and volunteers are needed to make the event a success.
Hume Springs resident Jake Cuomo organized the event after noticing an inordinate amount of trash and other items in the parks near his house. Jake, an active duty member of the US Coast Guard, says,
"Since being transferred here nearly four years ago I have tried in earnest to improve our community in every way. I also spend much of my meager free time outdoors within several Alexandria parks and throughout our community. While spending time in several of our local parks over the past several years, I have noticed an inordinate amount of trash and other items thrown about and I really want to do something about."
Those interested in lending a hand can meet at 9 a.m. Nov. 10 at the Four Mile Run Park building located at 4109 Mount Vernon Ave. or at either park anytime during the cleanup.
Cuomo asks that volunteers RSVP so an adequate amount of supplies can be ensured. To RSVP, send Cuomo an email at jfcuomo@comcast.net.
In 2011, Clean Virginia Waterways removed more than 295,000 pounds of trash and recyclables from the state’s beaches, lakes and waterways through similar cleanups.
