Alexandria Aces Seeking Host Families for 2016 Season!

Attention all Aces fans!

Your Alexandria Aces will be playing in their ninth season in Port City, this year, and are actively seeking host families for the upcoming 2016 season!

Do you have a spare bedroom with access to a washer or dryer during the upcoming months of June, July, and early August?

Do you have a son who plays baseball and you might like to have a live-in coach with your family during this summer?

Imagine, years from now, telling family and friends of an Aces player you hosted this summer who made it to a major league team. It has happened to many Aces host families in the past, and, it could happen to you in 2016!

This summer you might potentially be hosting a future major league player, such as Kyle Zimmer (University of San Francisco '12), pictured below, as an example, who played for the Aces during the summer of 2010 and was selected as the fifth overall pick in the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft, by the Kansas City Royals, (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzt1sVISrsw) and is projected be in their pitching rotation some time during the summer.

Amy will connect you with a player for you to host who will be coming to Alexandria to play 'lights out' baseball at Frank Mann Field.

As an IRS-deemed 501(c)(3) not-for-profit Alexandria community-based organization, host families are critically important to the Aces, and we sincerely thank you in advance for taking the opportunity to host a player, this summer.

Join Arlington County officials for a celebration marking the completion of the Crystal City Potomac Yard Transitway – the Washington area’s first right-of-way dedicated to premium surface transit.

The Transitway will provide faster, more reliable bus service between the Crystal City and Braddock Road Metrorail stations, with amenities designed to attract new bus riders.

About the Project

Arlington County and the City of Alexandria are building the Washington metropolitan area’s first right-of-way dedicated to premium surface transit. The new 4.5-mile Transitway between the Crystal City and Braddock Road Metrorail stations will provide faster, more reliable bus service along the congested Route 1 corridor, with amenities designed to attract new riders.

Arlington’s Transitway section includes a new all-day dedicated transit lane in Potomac Yard, a peak period transit lane in Crystal City and seven new transit stations. Separating bus service from traffic will result in corridor-wide travel time savings of 1-1/4 to 10 minutes for riders.

The Transitway will support redevelopment already underway in these neighborhoods, as well as planned development in Potomac Yard.

Metroway

Along the Transitway, WMATA’s new Metroway bus service will operate at high-frequency during peak hours and serve a consolidated number of stations. Station amenities will include real-time arrival information, higher curb for easier vehicle boarding, canopies for weather protection, seating, lighting, and wayfinding information.

Alexandria’s Transitway section opened in August 2014, which allowed the first phase of Metroway service to begin.

COMMUNITY LODGINGS HOLDS 11TH ANNUAL SPRING FORWARD EVENT Raises Awareness and Funding for Alexandria's Low-Income and Homeless Families

On Sunday April 10^th, 2016, Community Lodgings will host its 11th annual fundraiser, Spring Forward,from 5:00 - 8:00 pm at Union Street Public House, 121 S. Union Street in Alexandria, VA. This event will showcase the past 11 years of Community Lodgings’ commitment to the City of Alexandria and spotlight all the work we have accomplished.

"This is going to be a fantastic event," said Lynn Thomas, Community Lodgings' executive director. "I'm particularly excited about the music and the live auction packages. I'm planning to bid on the Cancun trip myself. And I'm especially grateful to the Union Street Public House for their continual, generous support of Community Lodgings each year."

The Philadelphia international recording artist The Intruders will headline the live music part of the program, and several local musicians will perform as well. Union Street Public House is once again donating their venue, food and staff. The event includes a dinner buffet and an open bar. Live auction items include a stay in a country cottage near Paris, a Cancun villa that sleeps eight and other adventurous prizes. The program portion includes the presentation of the Christopher M. McMurray Outstanding Program Achievement Award to a family that has excelled in Community Lodgings’ Transitional Housing and/or Youth Education Programs.

The cost per person is $50 in advance, $60 at the door and $40 to Community Lodgings volunteers and young professionals under the age of 40. Arlandria Easter Eggstravaganza 2016, Saturday March 26th

Everyone is invited to the 2016 Arlandria Eggstravaganza!!

This years partner organizations include: Casa Chirilagua, The City of Alexandria, Community Lodgings, Elevate Church, Love of Christ Church, National Community Church,and Restore Alexandria.

This is one of the most EGGciting Easter events in the Alexandria/Arlington area. The event is filled with entertainment, food, music, and of course an old fashioned egg hut with 1700 eggs.

This family friendly event drew 1500+ people last year and has plenty to do now matter you age. 

It will be happening Sat. March 26 between 11:00 AM and 2:00PM.

Arlandria Action Plan Advisory Group meeting Wednesday, March 16th

The Arlandria Action Plan Advisory Group will meet on Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at 7:00p.m., Cora Kelly Elementary School Library, 3600 Commonwealth Avenue.

Discussion will include updates on projects in the Arlandria area, as well as a presentation by AlexRenew regarding the Four Mile Run Pump Station educational fence.

The meeting is open to the public and community members are encouraged to attend. Spanish interpretation is available upon request by contacting Graciela Moreno, 703.746.3808.
